The plot of this story is the family accepting Sarah and the changes that happen because she is part of the family now. An example of this is how there is singing again in the family because Sarah likes to sing.

Sarah, Plain, and Tall is a story about a widowed farmer and his two children, Caleb and Anna. The family lives in the midwest. The father puts out an advertisement for a wife and mother. Sarah, who is from Maine, answers the advertisement, and goes to live with the family. She travels by train, along with her cat, Seal. Sarah becomes homesick and misses the ocean. When Sarah leaves, Caleb thinks she isn't coming back, but she returns with colored pencils so she can illustrate the beauty of Maine for the children. The children and Papa grow attached to Sarah, and they are excited to hear singing and sense happiness in the house once again. They plan to get married and become an official family.
